General Description:
The Department of Sociology at Queens College, City University of New York invites applications for a post-doctoral position. The successful candidate will participate in a study investigating the link between gated communities and residential segregation as part of a two-year research grant funded by NICHD. Urban scholars across disciplinary boundaries have recently focused on the costs and benefits of gated communities on larger areas but the empirical evidence is quite limited. Using an original dataset, constructed specifically for the purpose of the study, the project integrates theories and methodologies from urban sociology and urban geography to understand the increasingly important socio-economic impact of gated communities on urban America. The project is innovative and will lead to series of publications, conference participations and establish a solid ground for future research proposals.

Core Competencies/Qualifications:
Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in hand, either in sociology or geography and start on February 1, 2009. They should have strong quantitative background and interest in applying spatial methodology; they will be expected to have technical and analytical proficiency in working with software packages such as ArcGIS and GeoDa. The prospective candidates should be able to construct and maintain georeferenced database, conduct exploratory spatial data analysis, and be familiar with spatial autocorrelation and regression.

Please apply online at: http://www.rfcuny.org/hr/pvn/cgi-bin/show_job.asp?pvn=REA-741. Application review will begin on December 15 and remain open until the position is filled. For additional information, contact elena.vesselinov@qc.cuny.edu .

Dear Search Committee chairs,

I can be a great asset to your department in the areas of medical sociology, quantitative methods, social stratification, race and ethnicity, and political sociology.

I have several sole-authored peer review publications written and published while a graduate student. Various drafts of papers are in the pipeline now.

I have also prepped and taught nearly eight different courses at a large Research 1 in the Northeast where I am finishing my doctoral degree.

I have sent out many applications and only made a few long-lists. Most faculty said I would have an easy time on the market, but as we all know this is not the case for anyone.

I work very hard and would love the opportunity to work as a tenure-track assistant professor in your department.

I understand making sacrifices in hard times.

I will take a $5,000 pay cut for my first two years (depending if there is a loophole in your faculty contract that allows such). I can also teach an extra course each semester for the first two years.

I will defend my dissertation in early Spring of 2009.

While I recognize this is unorthodox, I really hope you might consider contacting me. I am a serious person.

Interested Search Committee chairs please email at:

sociologyphd2009@gmail.com

Thank you for your time.

To avoid professional embarassment, I prefer to remain anonymous.

Everyone has their favorite way of using the internet. Many of us search to find what we want, click in to a specific website, read what’s available and click out. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s efficient. We learn to tune out things we don’t need and go straight for what’s essential.
This goal-oriented way of surfing the web is largely based on short-term results. For example, finding facts to write a blog post, doing a comparison before making a purchase and reading a news site to find out what’s happening right now.
